Laboratory Supervisor

Job Summary
Under general supervision of Regional clinicalLaboratory Director, Laboratory site Manager, supervises day-to-day operationsof Queens Hospital Center Hematology and Central Accessioning area of the RapidResponse Laboratory in accordance with policies and procedures. Ensuresexpeditious processing of laboratory specimens from various services forhandling by Chemistry and Hematology sections. Performs day-to-day qualitychecks, screening specimens as required and in response to negative CQI data;ensures ongoing high quality of processing results in accordance with qualityassurance/CQI guidelines. Ensures high-quality data entry of testresults and data preparation for reporting requirements. Assists indevelopment of policies/procedures and quality assurance/CQI standards. Providesdaily supervision of technical staff. Schedules staffing and employeeworkload; monitors overtime. Ensures proper daily operation ofequipment; maintains equipment and/or coordinates servicing by externalvendors. Expedites orders and supplies for section. Maintainsawareness of regulatory guidelines. Provides training or instructionto staff; trains staff on new equipment. Provides support to patients ofall ages via processing of clinical specimens in accordance with qualityassurance/CQI and regulatory guidelines.
Duties andResponsibilities
1. Undersupervision of manager, supervises the Hematology section and overseesthe processing staff of Central Accessioning Area, providing 24-hour,7-day-per-week service for various hospital clinical departments; ensurestimely and efficient processing of Hematology specimens and complete andaccurate morning phlebotomy request entry and M-Draw preparation; monitorsworkflow and performance through use of department developed qualityassurance/CQI indicators.
2. Performspersonnel management and staffing functions:
schedules staff for continuouscoverage; evaluates staff performance using Human Resources personnelevaluation forms; advises on hiring of staff and performs discipline inconsultation with Manager; may recommend disciplinary action includingdischarge; trains and assigns work to staff directly or through instructionscommunicated to staff. (Off-hour shifts are generally monitored by thisposition.) Attends any meetings relating to union affairs or laborrelations as required; completes documentation required for supervisoryrole in union environment.
3. Performstimekeeping duties, such as submission of weekly payroll timesheets; monitorsaccrued leave time of staff in order to schedule vacations, approve leaves andmonitor absences.
4. Monitorsperformance and maintains all systems including recordkeeping requiredby regulatory agencies and hospital clinical committees. Must respondimmediately to shutdown/failure of Laboratory Information System (LIS),correcting/expediting specimen flow within acceptable time limitations. Must review/correct employee processing errors on off-hour shifts, using appropriate documentation/corrective measures. Resolves all specimenproblems as they arise. Maintains constant pager contact in absenceof Manager.
5. Maintainspolicy and procedure manuals for area, as required by department and inaccordance with regulatory guidelines. Revises/develops routine proceduresunder the guidance of immediate supervisor.
6. Performsquality assurance/CQI functions in conjunction with Laboratory Manager, such asdeveloping quality assurance/CQI indicators for operation of accessioning area;monitors efficacy of indicators; analyzes resultant quality assurance data.
7. Performsmiscellaneous functions, such as preparing budgetary requests for area forreview by immediate supervisor. Performs all related duties as requiredfor proper operation of area or as requested by departmental manager.
Minimum Education
Job requiresknowledge of laboratory systems and the interaction of systems with clinicalareas at level normal acquired through completion of minimally an Associate'sDegree in Medical Technology/ Basic Science. A Bachelor's degree in MedicalTechnology or Biology/Chemistry preferred. ASCP/equivalent certification in relevant area is preferred.
Minimum Licensing Requirements
New York StateDepartment of Education Clinical Laboratory Technologist license required.

Minimum Related Experience
Prior workexperience of five to seven years experience as a lead or senior technologistor junior supervisor in large-scale healthcare organization or high-volumeproduction environment to gain seasoned familiarity with fast-paced clinicaloperations. Should be familiar with mostmajor types/models of computerized clinical laboratory systems and equipment;should have experience in unionized environment.
